Your HVAC unit works year-round to keep your home comfortable, and you, happy. But working 24/7/365 means there’s some general wear and tear to the system over time. Here are five easy steps that you can do every three months to help keep your HVAC unit running smoothly.
1. Change your filters.
Changing your filters is step #1 to effective HVAC performance. Old, dusty, clogged filters pollute your air and cause your HVAC system to work overtime to maintain an even temperature throughout the home. 2. Check for debris.
Debris can include weeds, vines, and other greenery that grows around your HVAC unit. You don’t want your unit to be overgrown with shrubbery – this can be damaging and can shorten the life of your system. If the unit has had debris in, or around it, you may need a full system cleaning.
3. Clean your blowers.
What’s a blower? A blower is used to push air out of your HVAC system. If your blower is too dirty, the air won’t come out as it should. It may sound like your system is on and working, but dust build-up can quickly make your HVAC unit ineffective.
4. Clean your coils.
Your HVAC unit is sitting outside, so of course, it will gather dirt, dust, and pollen particles. You’ll want to clean your coils from the inside out using a water hose and cleaner. Why? Like a dirty filter, dirty coils can affect the efficiency of your HVAC unit.
5. Research ducts.
If the duct work for your HVAC system is too small, it’s comparable to you breathing through a straw. You’ll want to ensure that your HVAC unit has the proper size.
Different ducts have different advantages. Popular ducts include:
- Sheet Metal Ducts, which are the least likely to grow mold, have the least air flow resistance and last the longest.
- Fiberglass Lined Ducts don’t collect condensation when your air is cold
- Fiberboard Ducts are great for hot air and are soundproof
- Flex Ducts are easy to install and inexpensive
